Most recently, the Alberta oil sands in Canada have received global attention. This newly found North American resource is a multi-billion dollar investment. As of 2006, the oil sands were responsible for 62% of the province’s total crude oil and equivalent oils. The total percentage for all crude oil produced in Canada was 47%. The sands are buried under Alberta’s forests and are potentially 8 times larger than the oil reserves in Saudi Arabia.
